Never Too Late: My Musical Life Story
John Holt

New York: Delacorte, 1978
ISBN 1-871526-10-8

John Holt is an educator, lecturer and amateur musician. He starts to love music when he’s already an adult. He finds out passionate in music very much and enthusiasts to learning any instrument. Taking a flute lesson in thirty-four. And began to learning cello over forty since then eager to clear a space to enjoy his cello music rest of his life. Too many people seem they’re too old to learn any new things. From John’s perspective which amazed us never too late to learn and explore in. His experience in learning to instrument also influenced his teaching career. Through his enthusiasm and experience which inspire him to find out the very best solution for the student.

The book inspires me very much of his word and thinking. He found out his interested. He acts as a child desire to learn and explore in. Heed his inner voice let go straight in the world of music. His message not only give me tips to study music also let me know how to learning better.

Along the book as I read, two people drop in my mind. Just because two of us looks John very much whose mind influenced me as well.

A friend of mine called Gloria she’s my roommate from the landscape summer course in Italy nearly 5 years ago. She’s a grandmother grade but skillful to using her laptop at night within our study. She let me know she’s an asking woman and enjoys very much in the study and learns anything whatever she wants. I’m glad of known her I’m still young. Now and then I start to learn anything I like and don’t scare anything I can’t do the best.

The other one is Mr. Lam as aged men. Teaching piano lesson for me nearly 4 years long. He’s a well-educated teacher. He knows not only in music but many things in physics. I respect him of his patient in self-study. Probably he is a professional musician. He still works hard to practice piano all the time and concentrate on studying any music note and description he doesn’t know. Such as highlighting any notes and keep checking many kinds of the version from his huge resources. As if an English version, he did write down the whole of translation. He used to talk throughout the class, not only in music but many experiences of his life as well as his philosophy. I can say absolutely he’s so stubborn to work of his own. It’s better to say he’s fully artistic. I don’t want to say too much about his stubborn or artistic character. Perhaps he makes me a lot of pressure of exam as well as never guild me to get pass any exam within 4 years long under his teaching module. I’m not his student anymore. From now and then I still respect him. Thus, he teaches me more than I can get the pass as he used to say.

How to learning to better is really struggled I myself. I used to a work harder in school when I’m younger. I paid double effort than my classmates did. However, the result of mine as bad as my expectation. It’s a poor experience since I’m a little. Luckily my talent in art is pretty good covered. Thus, I’m an outstanding student in art subject and got a lot of prizes. I used to out of the class insist the other teacher drawing or decorating any stuff for celebrating Christmas or any event.

Self-study is an excitement experience. Figure out any problem by yourself as happy as got an answer as quickly from anyone. It may waste plenty of time to study and research. However, I enjoy very much of the process I have had cause it worth to keep it. Moving on, from the book as I read which reminds me how too effective to study. I also gain the key to exploring in self-study. You may have your own system to work out. As John, he himself finds out his own. Just because he starts late to learn but just in time he catches the train in a right direction fall of his life in music.

Musicians in tune
Jenny Boyd, PH. D With Holly George-Warren
Simon & Schuster
1992 1ISBN 0-671-73440-7

Musicians are the torchbearers, the spokespersons of an outline. Their songs express not only the feelings and ideas of individual but of his or her generation and its culture. (P19)

The author had interviewed more than 20 musicians. They’re songwriter, drummer, guitar, and singer. We can share their dreams and fantasy, a life of learning and creativity from the field in jazz, rock, heavy metal as well as the crossover. Great sources for us to know people nut about music. What’s going on in their culture background, childhood story as well as influenced from their buddy inspiration. Some story is quite interesting such as a life with the anti-TV parent, a story of emotionally handicapped in music expressing. Probably we may

There is some tie between religion and art; I think there’s a lot of crossovers.

I feel like the blues is actually some kind of documentary of the past and the present and something to give people inspiration for the future.

“If you’re playing with five guys, you’re thinking with five minds also, and it’s all just going click-click, and you’re not really aware that you’re thinking.”

“…. It makes all the bull snit, all the heartache, all the doubts, and all the negative side of being a musician. If I could bottle that feeling and sell it. Well, I’d bottle it and give it.”
